Becoming a Volunteer

How to Help

Volunteers come from many different backgrounds and vary in age, but all are parents. They are chosen for their friendliness and understanding, are appropriately approved and are trained before being matched with families ( two training courses each year). A Criminal Records Bureau check is undertaken and references taken up.

What do they do?
Volunteers visit one or more families a week. If they are unable to help a family they will know someone who can! Volunteers accept families for who they are and give about three hours of their time each week.

Who can become a volunteer?

All ages and backgrounds are welcome as long as they have had parenting experience. They need no specific qualifications, vary in age from young mums and dads to grand-parents and must be able to listen with understanding and
to respect confidentiality. They offer a sympathetic approach. Parents who have been visited often become volunteers.

What support is available to our volunteers?
Planned support is offered to all volunteers. This is usually on a one-to-one basis between the volunteer and the co-ordinator but will involve the referrer when appropriate. Volunteers also support each other. All are offered formal and informal group meetings and social events.
